Prime Minister Condemns Killing of Chinese National in Wau-Waria District and Reassures Law Enforcement Action

The Prime Minister, Hon. James Marape, MP, has expressed his deep condolences and condemnation following the tragic killing of a Chinese national engaged in alluvial mining activities in the Wau Waria District, Morobe Province. This heinous act has also resulted in several injuries and significant damages.

In addressing this grievous incident, the Prime Minister stated, “It is with profound sadness and outrage that I address the recent violent attack that has led to the tragic death of a Chinese national and injuries to others in the Wau Waria District. Such senseless acts of violence are completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our country.”

The Prime Minister has issued a stern warning to those responsible for such criminal activities.

“Those who perpetrate these violent acts will face the full force of the law. The Government of PNG is firm in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all individuals residing in our country, including our international partners and workers. We are taking immediate steps to resource our Police Force adequately, extending our law enforcement capabilities to the ward level to prevent such incidents and bring perpetrators to justice swiftly.

“We will also investigate how the Chinese man got engaged in the alluvial mining business.”

In a message to the Chinese Government, the Prime Minister conveyed his condolences and reassurances.

“On behalf of the Government and people of PNG, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and to the Government and people of China. We stand in solidarity with you during this difficult time. We assure you that every effort is being made to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for this crime. Our police forces are fully mobilized and are working tirelessly to ensure that justice is being served.”

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe and se- cure environment for all who contribute to the development of PNG, highlighting the country’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting all residents and foreign nationals within our borders.
