Prime Minister Hon. James Marape extends heartfelt congratulations to the Papua New Guinea Kumuls for their outstanding 42-20 triumph over the Cook Islands Aitu in today’s Pacific Championships rugby league match at Santos National Football Stadium.
The Kumuls, led by captain Lachlan Lam, showcased exceptional skill and determination. Lam’s leadership was instrumental, contributing a try, three try assists, and 117 running metres. Fullback Nene Macdonald also delivered a stellar performance, crossing the try line twice and amassing significant run metres.
This victory propels the Kumuls into the promotion-relegation match against New Zealand, scheduled for next Sunday at CommBank Stadium. A win in this crucial fixture would secure the Kumuls a place in next year’s Pacific Championships Cup division, aligning with the nation’s goal of competing regularly at the highest levels of international rugby league.
Prime Minister Marape stated, “Our Kumuls have once again made the nation proud with their exceptional performance. Their dedication and teamwork are exemplary, and I am confident they will continue to excel in the upcoming promotion-relegation match. The entire country stands behind them.”
The Prime Minister also highlighted the unifying power of rugby league in Papua New Guinea, drawing parallels to how rugby union served as a catalyst for national unity in South Africa under Nelson Mandela’s leadership. He emphasised that sports can bridge cultural and social divides, fostering a sense of national identity and pride.
“This victory is a significant milestone in the lead-up to Papua New Guinea’s inclusion in the National Rugby League (NRL) in 2028. The government’s commitment to this initiative is evident in the recent in-principle agreement with the Australian Rugby League Commission, backed by a 10-year funding plan. This strategic move aims to enhance the nation’s presence in international rugby league and promote socio-economic development through sports,” Prime Minister Marape said.
“As we look forward to joining the NRL in 2028, today’s victory is a testament to our potential and the bright future of rugby league in Papua New Guinea. Let us continue to support our Kumuls as they pave the way for greater achievements on the international stage.”
