Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has made an urgent and impassioned appeal for peace in Enga Province, as Police Minister Hon. Peter Tsiamalili Jr and Police Commissioner David Manning prepare to travel to the region tomorrow. They will meet with the Enga Provincial Government and all key stakeholders to discuss the Terms of Reference for the recently declared State of Emergency (SOE), following widespread lawlessness in the province, particularly at the Porgera valley .
The Government has imposed the SOE after escalating violence and unrest in Enga, underpinned by the illegal use of firearms.
“The SOE is necessary because of the widespread lawlessness throughout the entire province. We are seeing an alarming use of firearms, and this has to stop,” the Prime Minister said.
He issued a strong plea to the people of Enga to abandon violence and resolve their differences through traditional and legal means.
“I appeal to all the people of Enga: there is no need to resort to firearms to fight and kill each other. There are traditional ways to address disputes, and if these fail, our legal system offers pathways to justice.”
As part of the SOE, the government will implement measures to restore order and safeguard the well-being of the local community. This includes a National Identification (NID) registration for all residents in the Porgera area to ensure only legitimate locals remain, as well as the introduction of a liquor ban.
“We are committed to arresting lawbreakers in the immediate term, while working towards long- term solutions. This includes building the necessary infrastructure to support peace and stability in Porgera and across Enga,” Prime Minister Marape added.
The Prime Minister further emphasised that the government, in collaboration with New Porgera Ltd, will mobilise additional resources, including tax credit-funded projects, to address the law- and-order crisis.
“We aim to build critical law-and-order infrastructure, such as police stations, accommodation, courthouses, and lock-ups, at the earliest opportunity. These are essential for restoring peace and ensuring the safety of our people,” he said.
In closing, Prime Minister Marape renewed his call for peace and cooperation from the people of Enga.
“I urge the people of Porgera and Enga to lay down your arms. Work together for a brighter future, as the New Porgera Mine will bring tangible benefits to the region. Let us stop the fighting and allow peace to prevail so the mine can operate for the prosperity of all.”
