Prime Minister Marape Commends Minister Duma for Air Niugini’s Historic Fleet Expansion

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has praised State Enterprises Minister Hon. William Duma for his leadership in securing new aircraft for Air Niugini, marking the first major fleet acquisition since the late 1970s.

The Prime Minister’s commendation came after a high-level meeting with Minister Duma, Air Niugini Chief Executive Officer Gary Seddon, Kumul Consolidated Holdings (KCH) Managing Director Prof. David Kavanamur, and key SOE leaders, where the airline’s K5 billion transformation strategy was presented.

Seddon highlighted that Air Niugini is undergoing its largest capital investment in history, with 13 new aircraft arriving between 2025 and 2028, beginning with three Airbus A220s in September 2025, coinciding with Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary.

“This is a historic achievement for Papua New Guinea, and I acknowledge Minister Duma for his vision and commitment in ensuring our national airline is modernised,” Prime Minister Marape said.

“The purchase of these aircraft is a significant milestone, reflecting our government’s dedication to strengthening key national assets and enhancing connectivity for our people.”

The Prime Minister emphasised that Air Niugini’s new fleet will enhance service reliability, boost tourism, and strengthen trade opportunities.

“We are investing in our future, ensuring that Air Niugini remains competitive and continues to serve our country well,” he added.

“This is a proud moment for Papua New Guinea. I thank Minister Duma for his leadership in driving this transformative initiative for our national carrier.”

The Prime Minister also welcomed the airline’s expansion plans, particularly the fleet modernisation, stating: “A modern fleet will significantly improve connectivity and service delivery across the country. The government fully supports this investment and will assist by improving airport infrastructure and expanding pilot training initiatives to ensure the long-term sustainability of our national airline.”

Seddon welcomed the government’s strong support, stating: “Air Niugini’s transformation is critical for PNG’s economic and social development. Air transport is a vital link for business, tourism, and national connectivity. This investment ensures a modern, reliable, and financially sustainable airline.”
