PRIME MINISTER MARAPE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM ANNUAL MEETING

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has been invited to attend and participate in the exclusive World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Switzerland this month.

The WEF is a non-government global organisation that brings together leaders from business, politics, academia, and civil society to address global issues, with the objective of improving the world by shaping global agendas and finding solutions to challenges.

Opportunities to attend the meeting are given strictly by invitation only, directly from the Founder of WEF, Professor Klaus Schwab.

Prime Minister Marape revealed at the press conference before his departure to Palau today (15.01.25) that he has received a second invitation from Professor Schwab to address the Forum after missing his first opportunity because of the unfortunate situation of civil un- rest in the looting and rampage of businesses in Port Moresby in January last year, 2024.

Professor Klaus said in this invitation to the Prime Minister, “Papua New Guinea holds a pivotal position in sculpting an inclusive and sustainable future within the Pacific region, with ramifications ex- tending far beyond its borders. Against the backdrop of urgent environmental concerns and the dynamic evolution of the geopolitical terrain, participants eagerly anticipate gaining insight into your vision and strategic priorities for fostering economic growth and development in Papua New Guinea and the wider region.

“Your leadership and insights will be essential to the deliberations. As   such   the   World   Economic   Forum,   as   the   International Organisation for public-private cooperation, will work closely with your office to build a personalised agenda that has the greatest value for you.”

PM Marape will be using the presented opportunity of the WEF summit to also meet on the sidelines with global corporations with businesses and interest in PNG such as ExxonMobil, Total, Newmont, Bar rick, Starlink, Metta and others who will also be present.

This year’s WEF General Meeting, with the theme ‘Shaping the Intelligent Age’ will work at fostering new partnerships and insights to shape a more sustainable, inclusive future in this era of rapidly advancing technology.

It will focus on five key areas: Reimagining Growth, Industries in the Intelligent Age, Investing in People, Safeguarding the Planet, and Rebuilding Trust.

Over 100 governments, major international organisations, the 1000 most important global companies, relevant civil society and aca- demic institutions together with global media will interact at this high-level meeting.

More than 350 government leaders are expected to participate in this year’s meeting, including 60 heads of state and government, many of whom will come from G7 and G20 countries. United States President Donald Trump is scheduled to join the forum through live video link for an interactive dialogue with participants.

The 2025 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting convenes in the ski resort town of Davos-Klosters from 20 – 24 January 2025, where it is always held every year.

Prime Minister Marape departs Papua New Guinea for Switzerland on Friday, 17 January 2025, after returning from Palau.
