On behalf of the government and people of Papua New Guinea, I strongly condemn the recent unprovoked missile attack on Israel by Iran, along with the continued hostilities from Hamas and Hezbollah. Israel is not in physical conflict with Iran, and yet it finds itself facing this aggression, which only escalates the violence in the region.

This attack comes at a sensitive time, as we mark the first anniversary of the horrific October 7, 2023, assault on Israel by Hamas. Let us not forget that the subsequent conflict in Gaza would never have unfolded if Hamas had not initiated the attack on Israel on that tragic day. The violence of that event continues to reverberate, as innocent lives are lost, and communities suffer.

On this solemn anniversary, Papua New Guinea stands with the friends of Israel in calling for the immediate release of all hostages held by Hamas since that fateful day. As I stated in my recent address to the United Nations General Assembly, violence begets violence. The cycle must be broken, and conflicts must be resolved through peaceful means. Hamas and Hezbollah must lay down their arms for peace to prevail.Hamas must release the hostages alive. There must be a ceasefire.

Israel will be asked to cease its military operations when these groups abandon their violent campaigns. We urge all parties to find a way to negotiate for peace, for the sake of the innocent civilians caught in this tragic conflict.

Papua New Guinea remains committed to supporting efforts toward a peaceful resolution and encourages the international community to work together in promoting dialogue over warfare.
